Foods That Cause Heartburn – Heartburn Foods To AvoidThere are certain foods that are not contraindicated in acid reflux condition, but persons who are suffering from acid reflux symptoms, Heartburn or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), should keep in mind the foods to be avoided so not to aggravate such condition. First and foremost, if such conditions exist, the person should always remember that the pH level of the digestive tract should be maintained at normal levels within 24 hours. Within the allotted time, the person is encouraged to drink plenty of water so to minimize the acid content of the stomach. The person is not allowed to ingest these types of foods since they can potentially cause the increase of acid reflux. Many of these foods are fried and fatty foods that irritates and can instigate acid reflux attack.
These include the following: mashed potatoes, burgers and hot dogs, French fries, chicken nuggets, ground beef, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, corn chips, ice cream, chocolate, potato chips and salad dressings. Spicy foods are also a “no-no” when one suffers from acid reflux. These include chili-based meals or curry-based meals.
Some beverages also tend to increase the acid content of the stomach, and these comprise grape juice, orange juice, lemonade, coffee, liquor, and wines. Milk, although recommended in the past by medical doctors, should now be avoided. Studies show that a remarkable increase in the stomach acid is due to milk or milk-product ingestion. Vegetables are good for your health, but there are certain “veggies” that are not recommended for persons suffering from such condition. These include onions, broccoli, and cabbages. Although many foods are listed in the block list, there are also alternatives that cause little potential to heartburn, and the person should eat them with discretion. These include apple, banana, skinless chicken breast, fish with no added fat, multi-grain bread, rice and rice cakes, jellybeans and fat-free cookies. With proper observance of the acid reflux diet recommended to a person with this type of condition, the bad state of the digestive tract will be back to normal eventually, and the person can resume his or her normal activities of daily living.
